Metta Quintet plus Special Guests
From the work songs and spirituals that stemmed from the hardship of slavery, to the blues, to ragtime, to swinging big bands of the 1930s, to the rebelliousness of post-war Be-Bop and beyond, Stolen Moments aims to illustrate how jazz rapidly evolved from the single expression of the African-American experience to an ever-flourishing world music that has transcended ethnic and cultural boundaries. Featuring large screen projections, an original short documentary film and new arrangement of classical jazz repertoire, Stolen Moments highlights the interplay between the jazz movement and the evolution of American culture throughout the 20th century. This program emphasizes the ways in which jazz has acted as a unifying force, bridging cultural, ethnic and economic differences in the creation of the one truly American art form. As an engaging performance-demonstration, Stolen Moments introduces audiences to jazz music's rich history and to the names, faces and music of some of its many masters.

Nunsense
This zany evening begins as the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 fellow sisters. Money must be raised immediately for burials! The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show. Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this hit musical comedy is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a National Tour starring Sally Struthers.

The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial
Entirely based on original court transcripts, L.A. Theatre Works' The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial uses the format of live in-performance radio theatre, recreated by a renowned cast of actors. The performance dramatized the famous 1925 Tennessee v. John Scopes "Monkey Trial," which challenged the Butler Act ban on teaching evolution in public schools across the state and was the first trial to be broadcasted on the radio. Featuring actors of outstanding caliber, the cast transports the audience back to the crowded, stifling and intense courtroom in Dayton, Tenn., to experience the momentous trial as it happened. Fast forward to today, and the same questions are before us. What is it that makes this particular branch of science so controversial? Why are we, 80 years after the famous trial, still echoing the arguments of its great orators, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan?

Wu Man and Friends
Performing selections from her 2005 album, Wu Man and Friends, Wu Man pays homage to the plucked instrument and explores the dichotomy of the familiar and the foreign with musicians from Uganda, the Ukraine and the southern Appalachian Mountains. Wu Man pairs the pipa with other plucked instruments from across the world to find the similarities and the differences between styles, traditions and locations. Joining her at the Lied Center is James Makubuya playing the sharp tonality of the Ugandan Endongo and Adungu and Lee Knight playing the quick twang of the North American banjo. Wu Man, a classically trained and internationally renowned string musician, fuses the music of the pipa - a lute-like instrument with history of more than 2,000 years in China - together with the music of other traditional cultures, as well as contemporary songs and artists.

Doubt
“Doubt,” a Pulitzer Prize winning play wraps its characters in suspicion and moral uncertainty. "What do you do when you're not sure?" Father Flynn asks the audience in the opening line. His colleague, Sister Aloysius, is an old-school nun who insists that her students not be coddled: "Every easy choice today will have its consequence tomorrow. Mark my words." Flynn, following the Second Vatican Council's directive, believes the clergy should be more accessible to the parish and be thought of "as members of their family." These two schools of thought come into direct conflict when Aloysius suspects Flynn of "interfering" with the school's first black student.

Calder Quartet
Like Alexander Calder and his invention of the mobile, the Calder Quartet also uses principles of equilibrium and stability to balance the pairing of traditional chamber music with contemporary and avant-garde works. Performing a program including minimalist pieces by Riley, neo-romantic Rouse and contemporary Johnston, the Calder Quartet has a splendid and substantial ability to juxtapose the old and the new. Now resident quartet at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, the Calder Quartet has taken over the brimming metropolis and has been praised for its unified sound and approach, lyricism and flow and sophistication and elegance.

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
What defines the sound of America? The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) explores this question through American music spanning hundreds of years. The performance will feature American mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe performing Alan Smith’s moving song cycle based on Margaret A. Frink’s daily journal during her passage by covered wagon across the Oregon Trail towards dreams of California gold. Stephanie Blythe has appeared in the great opera houses of the world including the Metropolitan Opera, Seattle Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and the Opera National de Paris. The home of the CMS is New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the largest performing arts complex in the world. The CMS draws more people to chamber music than any other organization of its kind.

Presenting an evening of Glass' significant and substantial body of work, the program includes performances of the dynamic Etudes II & X and the bittersweet Metamorphosis II, III, IV, both for solo piano. Also included is Glass' Tissues from the Qatsi film Naqoyqatsi as well as Closing from his 1982 album Glassworks. Tree of Life - Origins and Evolution
Tree of Life - Origins and Evolution, is the product of a two-year collaborative Creative Campus project, culminating in an exciting evening of music, dance and theatre exploring the intricacy, challenge and revelation and performing arts. Tree of Life features the contributions of several academic departments at KU, the Lied Center and a number of resident and touring artists including commissioned involvement of two-time Grammy Award-winning David Balakrishnan, founder of the Turtle Island String Quartet. Having commissioned a previous work from David Balakrishnan - one which he went on to win his first Grammy Award for - the Lied Center has been eager to involve Balakrishnan again in this momentous and critical work. Tree of Life explores perceived incompatibilities as well as shared similarities and is itself a metaphor to bridge the disciplines of science, humanities and performing arts at KU.

Diavolo
Diavolo company members are dancers, acrobats, gymnasts, actors, and athletes. Under the guidance of artistic director Jacques Heim (one of Buzz Magazine’s “100 Coolest People in L.A.”), Diavolo takes movement, athleticism and risk to the extreme and creates surreal, almost cinematic experiences in which the imagination thrives! Dancing, leaping, flying, climbing, falling, and spinning on oversized dramatically lit architectural sets and structures, Diavolo creates clever metaphors for the absurdities of life. “Diavolo combines organized peril with drama and mordant wit.” – New York Times

Larry Schwarm is the most prominent fine art photographer living in Kansas and his hometown is Greensburg. Prompted by a middle-of-the-night telephone call from his parents, he hurried to his hometown, checked on his family, and began a series of photographs the morning after the devastating tornado on May 4, 2007.
